Australia
Australia consists of six states and two territories: New South Wales, Queensland,
Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania the Northern Territory, and Australian Capital Territory.
Sixty-five percent of the continent is desert. People from sixty different nations make
up the population of over 20 million, and an estimated 1.6% of these are Aboriginal. The
first recorded explorer to claim Australia was Captain Fernandez de Quiros from Portugal. While sailing in 1606,
he saw the land and prophesied that Australia would be the “Southland of the Holy Spirit”. Captain Cook, from England, discovered Australia in 1770. He gave Christian names to some of its places, such as, Trinity Bay and Pentecost Island. About 28% of the people are
Catholic, 27% Anglican, 6% Eastern Religions, 1% Aboriginal Dreamtime and the rest are Evangelical and Pentecostal. |
